Political Education Committee
The Political Education Committee provides opportunities for learning, discussion, and the development of a robust big tent socialist political culture within DSA at both the chapter and national level.
The ultimate goal of the Political Education Committee is to enable Alachua County DSA members to become socialist organizers who can effectively articulate our demands and explain the tenets of socialism needed to build and maintain a mass and diverse working-class movement in Alachua County.
We aim to use group discussion, peer-based guidance, and research and inquiry to develop socialist praxis. Our work is the self-education and self-emancipation of the working class.
Housing Committee
The Housing Justice Committee works toward the ultimate goal of creating social housing in Gainesville and Alachua County so that, as the DSA Housing Justice Commission says, “[we] live where we want, with whom we want, and how we want — to the extent that we can imagine using all available resources through a democratic process.”
To do so, it takes a dual-pronged approach, in which it works to empower tenants to improve their housing conditions through agitation and organization while developing and promoting policies that contribute to the construction of publicly owned and controlled social housing.
Ultimately, the Housing Justice Committee works with the vision of what we think of as a good city in mind - one in which housing policy, transportation and transit, safety, and ecological concerns are in tune with the needs and desires of the people, not landlords and capitalists.
Communications Committee
The Communications Committee serves as the public-facing voice for our chapter and as a means to communicate our ideas and efforts to the working people of Gainesville and Alachua County.
We utilize multiple platforms, including those controlled by our chapter as well as non-chapter publications, to do so. As the communications hub for our chapter, this committee conducts public outreach for chapter and committee events, promotes the internal and external work of the chapter, and spreads socialist ideas and theory to a wide audience. It also produces agitation and propaganda materials meant to increase working-class consciousness and public awareness of socialism.
Internally, the Communications Committee is responsible for ensuring chapter members are aware of upcoming events, campaigns, and issues of interest. It also assists in onboarding new and prospective members along with the Membership Coordinator.
